The Artist

Jayne is a practicing textile designer, author and tutor based in north Gloucestershire, UK. She has an MA in Fashion from Central St Martins and a 1st class degree in Textiles from Loughborough College of Art and Design.

For the past 25 years she has created innovative textile samples that explore the boundaries of modern embroidery, patchwork and needle felting. These ‘seeds of ideas’ have sold to clients including Chanel, Calvin Klein, Nina Ricci, Louis Vuitton, Dior and Balenciaga.

She regularly teaches experimental textile workshops and taught Kirstie Allsopp how to needle felt on TV. She has written six books Simply Felt (with Margaret Docherty), The Impatient Patchworker, The Impatient Embroiderer, New from Old, Simply Needle felt and Boho Felt Crafts with Rachel Henderson.

Jayne is the founder of No Rules Textile Society, an online community of textile adventurers.

The workshop

Needle felting but not as you know it! Jayne uses needle felting as a form of embroidery but you don't have to thread a needle! Instead the fibres are meshed together to form beautiful textured embellishments.

We will crunch silk, create mohair like weaves and transform plain garments and create incredible trims and edgings. There are so many possibilities for this simple technique.

The day  will be all about sampling and possibilities, pushing the boundaries of needle felting as an embellishment. We will explore upcycling our clothes and interior textiles using the techniques explored earlier.

You can upcycle and adorn your woollen...jumpers, cardigans, scarves, hats,  gloves, throws, felted coats and jackets, fine wool dresses and skirts, and anything else you can think of!

Jayne will bring along her stash of yarns, fiber and vintage tweed as well as silks and felt to play with.

She will also bring all the needle felting tools and embellisher machines*. As always the workshops will be highly experimental and rule breaking encouraged! This makes for very exciting workshops!

We will mix up techniques and add in elements like machine embroidery and the use of water soluble fabric. You will never look at wool in the same way again

*If you have your own embellisher machine, please do bring it along.
