Weathered Cloth Workshop with Debbie Lyddon – 13th & 14th April 2024

Debbie Lyddon is an artist and maker. Her work explores landscape and place, and her inspiration comes from experiencing and paying attention to her surroundings. Cloth is at the centre of Debbie’s practice and she enjoys the process of making and constructing with it. She combines traditional stitch techniques with non-traditional materials such as bitumen, salt and wax to make 2-D and 3-D works that evoke the sights, sounds and touch of coastal environments.

Debbie has an MA in Contemporary Textiles from the University of Hertfordshire and is a member of the 62 Group of Textile Artists.

This workshop explores how to weather and distress cloth. You will learn painting techniques to make cloth look weathered, including underpainting, stitched resists and washes. You will also learn techniques for making holes, including cutting, sanding, sewing eyelets. Textured surface decoration will be covered including machine stitching and washing paper. Other techniques will include waxing and rusting.

You will produce a series of samples using various weathering techniques plus simple bags and containers from your weathered samples.
