“Times 16” A Framed Landscape Story with Sally Kheng – 28 April 2024

Sally studied Art, Design and Business Studies at Trent College and Fine Art at Edinburgh College of Art. She has spent many years sketching and painting her local Lincolnshire landscape.
“I see the landscapes in vivid shades and I want to share my rose-tinted glasses with the viewer. I first depict the subject in sketchy scribbles of black pen in my sketchbook, then I reawaken my drawings in watercolour, fabric and threads.”

The workshop

A development from Sally's  ‘Times 9’ workshop at Hope and Elvis in April 2023 (you do not need to have attended the first workshop to do this one).

This 3 dimensional landscape painting and collage workshop will explore not only the inky colours of the landscape but also the abundant natural textures we can use to create interesting representations of our landscapes and bring our artwork to life.

You will begin by painting four landscape strips with a limited colour palette in beautiful highly pigmented watercolour inks. Then after selecting 16 small squares from your strips you will begin to add some detail to each one.

Using tools for mark making and Abaca tissue to transfer and invisibly collage images on top of your paintings you will create modern graphic effects bringing your paintings to a contemporary visual level. A selection of natural elements to work with such as cotton, silk threads, fabric and dried organic flowers/leaves will be supplied. Some of these will be stitched and some glued. 3D printed birds will also be supplied to add to your final painting.

Finally your 16 individual squares will be mounted on to a new sheet of paper and stitched together. You will each get a natural wooden panel frame to glue your painting to as your final landscape story comes together as one finished piece of art.

Sally will also bring watercolour inks but feel free to bring your own brushes, watercolour inks and any natural textures you might like to experiment with for your picture if you have them.
