Fabric Memory Box With Rosy Tydeman – 3 & 4 October 2026

Rosy Tydeman works from her studio, La Vie En Rose Makery, in the creative West Quarter of Exeter - named after the Edith Piaf song about seeing life through rose tinted spectacles!

Ever since sneaking upstairs at the age of three with an illicit pair of scissors and cutting up her dad's beautiful paisley pyjamas, Rosy has loved playing with fabric.

She’s worked as a shoemaker, a theatre gauntlet maker, a Steiner school teacher and an art cafe owner; but being a mother, a grandmother and making clothing and art from textiles have been the most consistent occupations in her life.

In her own practice, Rosy uses felting and embroidery techniques to make narrative pictures, clocks, brooches and other curios, which are based loosely on the themes of love and joy in everyday life. Her concern is that the ordinary everyday magic of the day-to-day can sometimes go unnoticed and under appreciated. In a world where conflict, natural disasters and economic upsets dominate the news, Rosy aims to make little reminders of love, beauty
and life's simple pleasures. Odes to joy!

Nowadays, alongside being a maker, she also loves running creative workshops in her studio, where she’s thrilled to see people's creativity fly! She’s become more and more interested in the benefits of slow stitching, taking time to make something beautiful by hand, putting down phones, coming away from screens, stopping the background noise of a hectic world, and finding peace in the process of slowly making alongside others. Chatting and lots of cups of tea put the icing on the the cake of course!

During this two-day course, you will create a Fabric Memory box inspired by All Souls' Day, an annual event in Exeter. Made entirely by hand from textiles, treasured photographs and memorabilia, this sentimental piece will honour and celebrate our departed loved ones.

Once confirmed on the workshop, you'll be asked to send an image (or two) of your loved one which Rosy will print onto fabric - these will feature on your box, which will be sewn by hand. You are encouraged to bring along any scraps of clothing, lace or buttons, etc, that belonged to the person who is the inspiration for your box.

This is a two day workshop that takes place over a weekend so that you can put lots of time and care into the making. It becomes an act of devotion to sit stitching your box, in the company of others in a similar situation. There is much comfort and connection during this workshop, and you will take home a precious keepsake made with love.
