The Artist

"I am a textile, collage, assemblage and book artist and I work mainly with found objects, old papers and photographs. I’m never happier than when I’m wandering around a flea market, picking up bits of ephemera and working out how to use them in my art. I like to create stories from old photographs and papers, often combining them with household or natural objects to create very personal artworks. Working with old photographs can be incredibly therapeutic; the person in the photograph becoming a conduit for your thoughts or feelings. In 2022, I co-wrote ‘Artful Memories; how to make unique art with old photographs.’
My courses are about sharing techniques and structures for students to explore their own stories, true or imagined, through the use of found materials and photographs."

The Workshop

The proximity of Hope and Elvis to Nottingham, with its proud history of lacemaking, was the stimulus behind the idea of creating a workshop that celebrates both the beautiful lace and the people who worked in the industry in days gone by. This workshop has been specifically designed by Jane to showcase some of the exquisite antique textiles and ephemera sourced by Wendy of Hope and Elvis.

In this course you will learn how to create a cohesive bundle of artefacts and adapt a container to house them.

We will:
• Adapt antique hinged containers
• Use pieces of original sketches made by lace designers from the Nottingham lace industry
• Transfer lace patterns to various surfaces
• Create stitched designs on paper and fabric
• Print using various media
• Make unusual pairings such as lace and plaster
• Create fictional lace-makers using vintage photographs and ephemera

At the end of the workshop you will have a charming antique box filled with a bundle of lace-related artefacts.
